Best Products for Fine Thin Hair That Add Volume

If you have fine, thin hair, finding products that add volume without leaving it flat or greasy can be a struggle. After years of trial and error, I’ve rounded up my holy grail shampoos, conditioners, styling sprays, and tools that keep hair lightweight, bouncy, and full of life

If you have fine and thin hair like me, you’ll know the daily struggle well: flat roots, no volume, and hair that seems to get oily faster than you can say “dry shampoo.” Naturally, over the years, I’ve tried every product with the word “lightweight” or promises of volume, thickness, and bounce. Some weighed my hair down, some made it greasy, and a few became my holy-grail products that I now can’t live without.

In this post I’m sharing my favourite products for fine, thin hair. From the best lightweight shampoos and conditioners to styling products that actually add volume without the crunch (crunchy hair is one of my pet peeves, along with knots). These are the things I personally reach for on repeat and I hope they help you fall a little more in love with your hair too. It can be a long journey to finally accept your hair; at least it was for me.

Redken Volume Injection Shampoo — The Best Volumising Shampoo for Fine, Thin Hair

My hairdresser recommended this to me and I’ve been using it for two years now. It truly is one of the best I have ever used. This shampoo gives my hair a fresh and clean feel without weighing it down. It’s lightweight, adds volume at the roots, and keeps my fine hair from going flat halfway through the day. And it smells amazing!

Redken Volume Injection Conditioner – A Lightweight Conditioner for Thin Hair

Again this was recommended by my hairdresser and I fell in love with it. Conditioner can be tricky for fine hair but this one is a game-changer. It softens and detangles without leaving that heavy, greasy feeling. My ends feel nourished while the rest of my hair stays bouncy. I only use this on my ends; if I use it on my roots they get greasy quicker.

Schwarzkopf Bonacure Color Freeze Treatment — The Best Treatment for Fine, Thin Hair

This treatment is amazing! I use it every two weeks. I wash my hair as normal, skip the conditioner, and apply this to my hair from roots to tips for a minimum of 10 minutes. It does not weigh my hair down, it smells nice and it protects my hair colour

💡 Tip: I find washing my hair every two to three days helps keep it fresh without over-stripping my scalp. It also helps to double-wash to get rid of oil and product build-up.

Leave-In Treatments and Sprays for Thin Hair

Keune Care Lumi Coat Spray – My Most Reached-For Product

This is my most reached-for product. It’s a shine spray that adds hydration, helps detangle fine, thin hair, and protects from heat. It smells amazing and has a very lightweight formula, so I’ve never had a waxy film or greasy feel from this. However, this product needs heat to be activated, so using it without blow-drying your hair will be useless.

Olaplex Volumizing Blowdry Mist – Heat Protectant for Fine Hair

Thin hair is more prone to breakage, so I never skip heat protection. This spray is super lightweight, protects my strands, and doesn’t make my hair limp or sticky. It also adds buildable volume. I have noticed, however, that if I spray too much on my roots, it does the opposite and makes them greasy and heavy. So, less is more.

Redken Big Blowout – Volumising Blowout Jelly

This blowout gel is really good. It gives a lift at the roots, offers heat protection, and is anti-frizz. A small pea-sized amount goes a long way. It smells good and just melts into your hair. It’s so lightweight and truly my fine, thin hair’s best friend.

Olaplex No. 9 – Detangling Serum

My hair tangles so easily, and it’s always a struggle after a hair wash day. But this detangler smooths everything out without weighing it down. Plus, it makes brushing much gentler on my fragile strands and offers heat protection and static reduction.

Olaplex No. 6 – Frizz Control Lotion

I never struggled with frizz until I moved to the Philippines (thanks, humidity). Not enough to make me look like Albert Einstein, but enough to bother me. This bond smoother from Olaplex is amazing. I use a very small amount on my mid-lengths to ends. Be careful—it can be a heavy product if you use too much.

Schwarzkopf Osis+ Airwhip – The Best Volumising Mousse for Thin Hair

This mousse gives me the perfect balance of volume and hold. It makes my hair look thicker, but still soft and touchable. Definitely no stiff or crunchy texture!

Schwarzkopf Osis+ Volume Up Hairspray – Lightweight Hairspray

I love this hairspray because it holds my style in place while still letting my hair move naturally. It also gives volume and helps with frizz. It doesn’t make my hair stiff or hard.

Olaplex No. 7 — Hair Oil

I have tried so many oils on my hair and have been disappointed every single time. Fine, thin hair is prone to being oily, and adding extra oil to that is a very, very bad idea. It can leave your hair looking stringy, greasy, and weighed down—not a flattering look.

But this Olaplex oil is the opposite. Using just four drops, it helps tame frizz and gives my hair a beautiful shine without the weight and greasy look. It’s the only oil I use on my hair, and it’s also heat-protective.

Moroccanoil Dry Texture Spray — Texture Spray for Fine, Thin, and Silky Hair

With fine, thin hair often comes silky-soft hair, at least for me. Hair ties and hair clips just glide right out of it. When I need a little texture for hairstyles or just extra volume on day two, this is my go-to product.

Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo (Dark Tones) – Dry Shampoo for Fine, Oily Hair

Dry shampoo is an absolute lifesaver for fine hair, and this one is my holy grail. It refreshes my roots, adds a bit of texture, and even gives me extra lift on second (or third!) day hair. It doesn’t leave a white cast and blends well with my roots. I also love the smell.

My second favourite is from Batiste; I always get this one if I can’t find the one above.

Wetbrush – The Best Brush for Fine Hair

I have been using this brand for 18 years. This brush is super gentle, glides through tangles, and doesn’t cause breakage (if you are gentle). It’s perfect for fragile, thin strands like mine.

Dyson Airwrap ID – The Best Blow-Dry Tool

I have to start by saying the Dyson Airwrap is a blow-dry tool, not a curling iron. If your hair struggles to hold a curl with a curling wand/iron or hair straighteners, it will not hold a curl with the Airwrap unless you use the right products. That said, it is a blow-dry tool, and it gives the best blowouts with volume once you master it.

My hair is healthier due to the lower heat, and I use it about twice a week. For me personally, this was a great investment. Since I got my Airwrap, I have not touched my other blow-dryers (my old hairdryer and the Revlon One-Step, which were my go-to for years).

Tips for Caring for Fine, Thin Hair

  • Avoid heavy oils and thick styling creams that can weigh your hair down.
  • Take care of your scalp—it’s the foundation for healthy hair growth. A quick massage while washing your hair using a scalp massager is not just relaxing and feels good, but it also helps the scalp and promotes hair growth.
  • But at the end of the day, do and use what works best for your hair!

FAQ – Best Products for Fine, Thin Hair

How can I make my fine, thin hair look fuller?
Use a volumising shampoo and conditioner, apply lightweight styling products like mousse or blow-dry sprays, and blow-dry your hair at the roots for extra lift. Dry shampoo and texture sprays are also great for creating fullness between washes.

Should I use conditioner if I have fine, thin hair?
Yes! Fine hair still needs moisture, but choose a lightweight conditioner and apply it only to the mid-lengths and ends, not the roots. This prevents hair from getting greasy or weighed down.

Q4: What is the best shampoo for fine, thin hair?
A4: Redken Volume Injection Shampoo is highly recommended for fine, thin hair. It cleans without weighing the hair down, adds volume, and keeps hair looking fresh longer.

Which styling products add volume without making fine hair crunchy?

How often should I wash fine, thin hair?
Washing every 2–3 days works best for most people with fine, thin hair. Double-washing can help remove excess oil and product build-up without over-stripping the scalp.

A Wetbrush is gentle for detangling, while the Dyson Airwrap is ideal for creating a voluminous blow-dry with less heat damage. Round brushes and scalp massagers can also help with volume and scalp health.
